Pavement can become much hotter than the surrounding air, so the temperature shown on your weather app does not tell you how hot the ground is under your dog’s paws.
A pavement temperature chart can help you understand how hot a measured surface is, but there is no single pavement temperature that can guarantee a surface is safe for every dog. Surface material, direct sun, shade, exposure time and the individual dog all matter.
Before walking on a warm day, check the actual ground. UK animal-welfare organisations commonly recommend placing the back of your hand against the pavement for several seconds. If it is uncomfortably hot for your hand, choose a cooler surface or wait until conditions improve.
Dog Pavement Temperature Chart: °C and °F
The table below converts measured pavement temperatures between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

Important: these figures refer to the temperature of the surface itself, not the air temperature. The table should not be read as a green, amber and red safety scale. There is not good enough evidence to say that one particular pavement temperature is universally safe for every dog’s paws while the next degree is dangerous.

Why Pavement Can Be Much Hotter Than the Air
Pavement is heated directly by solar radiation. A dark surface exposed to strong sunshine can absorb and retain substantial amounts of heat, so its temperature can be very different from the temperature of the surrounding air.
Research demonstrates just how large that difference can become.
A 2022 study measured concrete, grass, chip seal and tar surfaces during summer conditions. Air temperatures ranged from 25.6°C to 35.6°C, while some afternoon ground surfaces exceeded 65.6°C. Tar had the highest median temperatures, followed by chip seal, concrete and grass.
The same research also found large differences between other natural surfaces. Along a nature trail, measured ground temperatures ranged from 24.7°C on some surfaces in the morning to 52.1°C on brown sand later in the day.
These measurements were taken in Texas rather than the UK, so they should not be used as a formula for predicting British pavement temperatures. What they demonstrate is the underlying problem: ground temperature varies considerably according to the surface and conditions.
Factors that can affect the temperature beneath your dog’s paws include:
- direct sunlight or shade;
- surface material and colour;
- how long the surface has been exposed to sunlight;
- time of day;
- moisture;
- wind and cloud cover;
- the local surroundings.
That is why two areas only a short distance apart — for example, exposed black asphalt and shaded grass — may feel completely different underfoot.
Can You Calculate Pavement Temperature From Air Temperature?
Not accurately enough to use the result as a safety guarantee for your dog.
You may see charts online that claim, for example, that a particular air temperature will always produce a particular asphalt temperature. These figures can illustrate how much hotter a surface can become, but they should not be treated as a pavement temperature calculator.
Air temperature alone does not tell you:
- whether the surface has been in direct sun;
- what the surface is made from;
- how dark it is;
- whether it is wet or dry;
- how long it has been heating;
- whether it is shaded;
- how much heat it has retained from earlier in the day.
Even surfaces measured under the same air temperature can therefore be at very different temperatures.
For a real walk, checking the surface in front of you is more useful than trying to calculate its temperature from the weather forecast.
How to Check Pavement Temperature Before a Walk
There are two practical ways to assess the ground: physically checking it and, if you want an actual temperature measurement, using a surface thermometer.
Use the hand test
The RSPCA advises checking hard surfaces with the back of your hand before walking and says that if the ground is too hot to touch for five seconds, it is too hot for a dog’s paws. PDSA also recommends a five-second test.
The Kennel Club uses a slightly longer seven-second version of the same test: if keeping the back of your hand against the pavement for seven seconds is too painful, it advises that the surface is too painful for your dog to walk on.
There is little practical value in treating five versus seven seconds as an exact scientific dividing line. The important point is simpler:
If the pavement feels uncomfortably hot against your hand after several seconds, do not make your dog walk on it.
Try shaded ground, grass or another suitable cooler surface instead, or delay the walk until conditions improve.
Remember to test the surfaces your dog will actually encounter. Checking a shaded paving stone beside your house tells you little about an exposed road or path that has been sitting in full sun.
Use an infrared surface thermometer
An infrared thermometer can provide an actual surface-temperature reading without touching the ground.
This can be useful if you want to compare:
- sun and shade;
- asphalt and concrete;
- pavement and grass;
- different points along a route;
- the same surface at different times of day.
A thermometer is a measurement tool, however — not a device that can declare a walk safe.
A reading of 40°C, 45°C or any other number still needs context. Exposure time, surface type, the dog’s paws and the overall weather conditions all matter.
For that reason, Cool Canine does not recommend using a single thermometer number as permission to continue a walk.
Pavement Temperature Is Only One Part of Walk Safety
A pavement that is cool enough for your dog’s paws does not automatically mean that the weather is safe for exercise.
Dogs can also become dangerously hot through exercise. The RSPCA identifies dogs with health conditions, flat-faced breeds and dogs with thick coats among those that may be particularly vulnerable to overheating. Puppies and older dogs can also be at increased risk of heatstroke.
You therefore need to consider the whole situation, including:
- air temperature;
- humidity;
- direct sunshine;
- how strenuous the activity will be;
- how long your dog will be outside;
- access to shade and water;
- your individual dog’s age, breed, health and fitness.

Hot pavement and heatstroke are different hazards. A dog could encounter dangerously hot ground without yet having heatstroke, while another dog could overheat even if it has remained on grass. Signs Your Dog’s Paw Pads May Have Been Burned
Stop and check your dog’s paws if they suddenly seem reluctant to continue walking after being on a hot surface.
The RSPCA advises watching for signs including:
- limping or refusing to walk;
- licking or chewing the feet;
- paw pads becoming darker in colour;
- redness or blisters;
- part of a paw pad appearing damaged or missing.
These signs can have causes other than burns, so do not try to diagnose the problem solely from appearance.
If you know or suspect your dog’s paws have been burned, treat the injury seriously.
What to Do If You Think Your Dog Has Burned Their Paws
First, get your dog away from the hot surface so that the heat exposure stops.
PDSA’s current UK veterinary guidance for burns recommends cooling burnt skin with cool water for at least 10–20 minutes, avoiding ice or iced water and avoiding creams or ointments. It advises contacting a vet for any burn, regardless of its apparent size.
A sensible immediate sequence is:
- Move your dog away from the hot surface.
- Cool the affected paws with cool running water.
- Do not apply creams, ointments or ice.
- Contact your vet for advice and assessment.
Be careful not to chill the rest of your dog excessively while cooling a localised burn.
If your dog is also panting heavily, weak, uncoordinated, vomiting, collapsing or showing other signs of overheating, this may be more than a paw injury.
Heatstroke can be life-threatening. Stop exercise, move the dog out of the heat, begin appropriate cooling and seek veterinary help. Current RSPCA guidance emphasises cool first, transport second when a dog is overheating.
How to Reduce the Risk of Hot-Pavement Burns
The simplest protection is to avoid making your dog walk across a surface that has become uncomfortably hot.
On warm or sunny days:
- check the actual ground before starting;
- remember that different parts of the same route can have very different surface temperatures;
- favour suitable grass or shaded surfaces where possible;
- consider shortening or changing the route;
- walk during cooler parts of the day when conditions allow;
- carry drinking water as part of your wider hot-weather precautions;
- re-check the pavement if the conditions or surface change.

RSPCA, PDSA and the Kennel Club all recommend adjusting walks during hot weather and favouring cooler times of day rather than exercising dogs through the hottest conditions.
Do not assume that pavement must be cool simply because it is evening. A surface that has absorbed solar energy for hours can remain warm after the surrounding air has started to cool.
Likewise, do not assume that paw protection makes an otherwise unsafe walk acceptable. Dog boots can provide a physical barrier between a paw and the ground when correctly fitted and tolerated, but they do nothing to remove the dog’s wider risk of overheating.
Water is similarly important for hydration, but carrying a portable water bottle does not make dangerously hot pavement safe.

A dog pavement temperature chart is useful for understanding and converting an actual surface-temperature reading, but it cannot tell you on its own whether a walk is safe.
Pavement can become far hotter than the surrounding air, and its temperature varies with sunlight, material, shade, moisture and time of day.
Check the surface your dog will actually walk on. If you cannot comfortably keep the back of your hand against it for several seconds, choose a cooler route or wait.
And remember: protecting your dog’s paws is only part of the decision. Always consider whether the overall conditions are too hot to walk your dog before setting off.
